The Chinese short clip app TikTok more than doubled its download rate within a year. In May 2020 it had 111.9 million downloads, marking the currently most successful app worldwide.
The app is currently particularly successful in India, as many as 20 percent of the roughly 112 million downloads can be traced back there. Despite the trade dispute with China and various official warnings, 9.3% of all downloads of the Chinese app are due to US citizens.
In terms of smartphone use, TikTok was number 1 in the Android cosmos in May, on iOS, however, it was only second place behind the also controversial video chat app Zoom. In 2019, TikTok was downloaded a total of 700 million times and is only surpassed by Google’s WhatsApp. At the same time, the app tops the list of the world’s most profitable apps.
Most recently, free TikTok followers are also criticized for its censorship methods, especially in connection with the Black Life Matters hashtag. There are reports circulating according to which the algorithms used promote the videos of colored people less and thus suppress them artificially. The developers meanwhile promised to set up a “Creator Diversity Committee” and to revise its review strategy.
